We deserve much better
YOUR report headlined Ex-firefighter's role contained one inaccuracy (Post, December 12).
This was not the fault of the Post, it was a statement given by a Swansea Council spokesman who was quoted as saying: "This is the first time that political alliances have been formed on the fire authority".
This was in relation to Swansea Council's leader David Phillips using minor legal regulations to overrule an Act of Parliament and to deny Gordon Walker, an independent, his rightful place on the fire authority.
Recent Freedom of Information questions to the fire authority have revealed there have been political alliances and political groups on our fire authority since the old West Glamorgan days.

It is interesting to note that all political parties, barring Labour, chose to form a rainbow alliance to work for the good of the authority and the people, whereas Labour form a group whose only interest seems to be the Labour Party.
The Labour group tried to recruit Gordon Walker into its camp and failed, as Gordon wanted to work for the good of the people and not their party.
Swansea Labour councillors have sought to deny this, but the Labour councillors at Neath Port Talbot have confirmed in writing that Labour tried to recruit Gordon. Now David Phillips will not allow any Swansea councillor to attend the fire authority unless they sign a legal agreement with him. And now Richard Lewis has signed this, he cannot join the alliance. The fire authority has had legal counsel from a QC and deputy High Court judge whose opinion is that David Phillips's actions are contrary to the relevant Acts of Parliament. The people of Swansea deserve better and need someone of Gordon Walker's experience.
