From derelict building to thriving community resource
IT was just a derelict building before Adrienne Howes decided to do something about it.
And now, The Riverside Centre in Pontardawe is a thriving community resource, hosting craft workshops, guided walks, wildlife watching, musical evenings and much more.
And in recognition of her work for the community, Adrienne Howes has now been awarded the title of Give More Star by a UK-wide giving campaign, and is encouraging everyone in her area, and across Wales, to take part in the upcoming Give More Challenge.
The challenge is a week of action running this week, (From Mon Sept 16) encouraging everyone across Wales to make a pledge to give more support to the communities, charities or good causes they care about, and help spread the word to others.
For every pledge made, a pin will appear on the Give More Challenge map of the event’s website.
Everyone across the UK is being asked to help cover their area with people giving more time, money or energy to charities and good causes.
At the end of the week, the aim is for the map to be completely covered with pins.
Adrienne said: “Every bit of help is important — no amount of time or energy or money is more important than another.
“Giving adds an extra dimension to your life, and even helps keep you fit and healthy. It's addictive — once people start giving, its often like a drug and they don’t want to stop.
“I urge everyone across Pontardawe and Swansea, and Wales, to get on the map and pledge what they can, then find out how they can give more in whatever way suits them. We’re a generous part of the world; let’s stand up and be counted”.
Tamar Ghosh campaign director, added: “We’re hoping that every community across Wales will be represented on the Challenge map. Adrienne’s work is representative of the many fantastic things going on across South Wales and Wales as a whole. The more people who can respond to their challenge and see how they can give more, the better in terms of strengthening communities in the region at what’s proving to be such a difficult time for so many”.
