Can coverage be balanced?
SWANSEA City and Cardiff City now begin their first season together in the Premier League. It promises to be an exiting few months with both teams aiming to be the top Welsh club.
Hopefully, BBC Radio Wales will provide equal and impartial radio coverage of their respective games.
This would be in stark contrast to their coverage three seasons ago when both teams were competing in the Championship.
During that season BBC Radio Wales provided full live match coverage of each and every game of the full complement of 46 Cardiff City league fixtures to the whole Welsh population. Just eight of Swansea's league games were given similar treatment. These were the only eight Swansea City games that were not being played at the same time as Cardiff fixtures.
BBC Radio Wales provided this coverage via both their Freeview and Sky digital radio channels.
Full radio coverage of most of Swansea City's league fixtures was limited to the Swansea and Carmarthen areas via Radio Wales on VHF only. This of course was of no use to club supporters like myself, who reside outside this limited area. Was this bias towards providing more favourable coverage of Cardiff games more to do with the location of BBC Wales headquarters than the unlikely excuse of "technical reasons" quoted to me at the time?
