Five children arrested for possessing weapons as police foil Port Talbot versus Swansea brawl

FIVE children — some aged just 11 — were arrested for possessing offensive weapons as police swooped on Port Talbot to stop a mass fight.

Officers were deployed to the Sandfields area of the town after police received information — including from social media sites Twitter and Facebook — that a brawl between local kids and Swansea youngsters was being planned in and around Vivian Park.

South Wales Police say they mounted patrols in the area to try to stop the incident before the trouble could start — and as part of the operation arrested the five boys, aged between 11 and 16.

It is understood that among the weapons the children were carrying when they were picked up were a golf club and a snooker cue.

British Transport Police officers were also involved in the operation, especially around Port Talbot railway station.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "Police arrested five male youths aged between 11 and 16 after they were found in possession of offensive weapons during patrols of the Sandfields estate in Port Talbot on Friday afternoon.

"The patrols were being carried out after police received information about a planned gathering of youths in the area.

"Officers maintained a presence and there were no further reported incidents."

The five youngsters have been released on police bail.

News of the incident spread on networking site Twitter, with one user labelling those taking part as "childish boys thinking they are Rambo".
