Leadership hopefuls pay visit

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 13:00

WELSH Liberal Democrat leadership candidates Kirsty Williams and Jenny Randerson paid visits to the county last week.

Kirsty Williams, AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, launched her manifesto to become leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats last Monday morning, November 10, and then headed for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire for meetings with transport officers of the two county councils.

She was accompanied by John Gossage, the local prospective parliamentary candidate, as she visited West Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

They discussed a number of issues, including the fate of the 333 bus services between Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock and the 322 between Carmarthen and Haverfordwest.

That evening, Kirsty Williams spoke to an assembly of local party members gathered at Llety Cynin, near St Clears.

She said: "We had some very useful meetings with both Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire councils on public transport. It was a great opportunity for us to present our view of maintaining as many services as possible."

She added: "I think the party does need to change. We can do better than we've done in the past, especially in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. Coming from Carmarthenshire and having my considerable experience of urban and rural Wales, I think I can be a voice for Wales and bring new energy and be a fresh face to take us forward."

Jenny Randerson, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokeswoman on health and social care, spent November 13 meeting health and social care providers in the constituency just two days after Edwina Hart announced a fundamental shake-up of the NHS in Wales.

Accompanied by Mr Gossage, she met the chief executive of the newly merged NHS trust, Martin Turner, in Carmarthen.

Mrs Randerson said the party had grown considerably, but had to keep moving forward.

She added: "We have to be a party of government, not a party of opposition — we're seen as 'nice people', but we have to be 'nice people' that can deliver.

Mrs Randerson stated she was the first AM to have a Facebook account, adding: "Young people are very, very into ideas that are political."

One issue Mrs Randerson stressed was freedom: "The Government's latest plan to monitor all our emails and phone calls sends shivers down my spine. I think freedom is something we're all getting concerned about."
