He said: "Serious injuries were sustained by the driver of the vehicle.

"Investigations are ongoing."

Firefighters from Morriston and Neath and ambulance crews also attended the scene.

A Welsh Government spokesman said: "A road traffic collision occurred this morning at approximately 7:55am on the M4 eastbound between the slip roads at junction 43 that resulted in a vehicle leaving the carriageway.

"In order to enable the emergency services to effectively deal with the incident and to get traffic moving a diversion route was established that led traffic off the M4 at junction 43 and then immediately back on at the same junction.

"Both lanes were re-opened at approximately 11:30am.

"There was significant congestion in both directions due to this incident and we would like to thank those that were held up for their patience."

“The WTCC (an agency wholly funded and controlled by the WAG) run the Traffic Management on the M4, including all signage, coning off of scenes (Police carry around 10 cones max per car), diversions, maintenance etc. So it is very much something that they do.”

Have they got better things to do?”

“Any chance this accident was caused by driving too fast in bad weather? I came back from Cardiff yesterday evening approx 19.20 and on the way home was down to 50mph then 40 because the weather was atrocious. But other people (the minority thankfully) were hurtling down the outside lane, cutting in at junctions and making people slam on and some didn't even have their lights on full.
Close to home the speed limit was down first to 50 then to 40 but people kept hurtling past at ridiculous speeds, no wonder there are accidents. God only knows why there aren't more. We need more police on the motorways and bigger punishments for stupidity!!”
