Chairman Harry Worth, who has plunged into the waters for nearly three decades, said it was another great turnout.

"There was a big crowd and a great atmosphere," he said. "It was a lovely day.

"There were around 150 swimmers of all ages who took part.

"It is a nice thing to do.

"But it was very cold this year! Last year it was not so bad."

Mr Worth said he never missed the event.

"I have done it an awful lot of times," he said.

"I must have done it for 27 years.

"I have also done it on some Boxing Days as well.

"It started as two boys were training to do the English Channel.

"It was the start of the year for their training and it began from there."

Over the years thousands of pounds has been raised thanks to the swim.

"We have raise around £150,000 over the years, and usually we raise around £5,000 each year," said Mr Worth.

"It helps to raise a lot of money for Aberavon Lifeguard Club, which we use to teach local kids about lifesaving.

"Those taking part have to raise £50 and for that they get a T-shirt.

"After the swim we go to a local club and present some awards like best junior lifesaver.

"This is year we went to The Grove."
