WALES National Pool Swansea’s swimming stars are helping put the city on the map thanks to their heroics at the Olympics and the Paralympics.

Its Paralympians collected so many medals at the Games that had it been a country Wales National Pool would have come 39th out of 74 — nestled between Hungary and Serbia.

And now visitors are being given the chance to send their messages of congratulations to the Olympians and Paralympians with a special message board being set up in the pool foyer and on its Facebook pages.

Jeremy Cole, general manager at Wales National Pool Swansea, said: “The Olympic and Paralympic Games have been a tremendous success. We are enormously proud of the achievements of all those who went to London and did so well.

“Swimmers at the pool contributed 10 per cent of the entire medal haul for Paralympics GB and more than 30 per cent of the team's Paralympic swimming medals. It is an amazing result.”

Paralympic poster girl Ellie Simmonds led the way with two golds, a silver and a bronze. Steph Millward also picked up five medals — four silver and one bronze. And there were bronze medals too for Sam Hynd, Matthew Whorwood and Rob Welbourn.

Mr Cole said there was a strong bond between the elite swimmers competing at the summer Games and community swimmers at the pool which it’s hoped the legacy will build on.

He said: “After the incredible scenes at the Olympic and Paralympic parade in London we’re sure local people will want to add their congratulations to the team. That’s why we’re putting a message board up in the foyer of the Wales National Pool to add to the one on our Facebook page.

“Steph Millward has already led a learn to swim group at the pool and I’m sure she’ll be a huge inspiration for the next generation of youngsters wanting to emulate their heroes.

“We’ll be passing on all the messages we receive to the Olympians and Paralympians when they meet up for training. Our understanding is that they’ll be back in the pool next month.”

Billy Pye, coach to Ellie Simmonds and six of the seven medallists, said: “I can honestly say that the positive relationship and the tremendous support we have had from the Wales National Pool has been the best in the world.”

Anyone wanting to add their congratulations to the Wales National Pool teams can do so in person at the pool or online at the Wales National Pool's Facebook page or on twitter @WalesNatPool
