THIS newspaper played an active role in opposing the BBC's plans for local video on the internet because we knew it would damage local papers' efforts to invest in and develop their own websites. We were glad when the BBC Trust decided the millions it would have cost would be better spent improving regional TV and radio.

Now the Assembly has called for an English-language version of S4C to dramatically increase the number of peak-time programmes made in and about Wales.

That's a better project for the BBC to pursue.
