TRYING to choose the best moment from the last year of sport in Swansea is an unenviable task.

Ellie Simmonds's gold medals at the Paralympics, the Ospreys' last-gasp Pro12-winning performance in Dublin and the Swans' heroics in the Premier League are among the highlights of the last 12 months.

And with the annual Active Swansea Sports Awards edging nearer, the people of Swansea have the chance to pick their favourites for special recognition.

"The Swansea Sports Awards are a great opportunity for the public to recognise the great sporting achievement that happens in the city every year," said former disabled sports person of the year Ashleigh Hellyer. "It is always a memorable evening for the nominated sportspeople and their families, and I would encourage everyone who is aware of a worthy individual, coach or team to get nominations in."

Swansea Council has now opened nominations for the 2012 awards evening, which will be held at the start of December at the Brangwyn Hall.

The awards, now in their 12th year, are made up of 13 categories. They include senior team of the year, junior disabled sports person of the year and contribution to sport.

"The last 12 months have been terrific for sport in Swansea when people have had many opportunities to cheer on local heroes at the top of their game in both national and international competitions," said Councillor Nick Bradley, Swansea Council's cabinet member for regeneration.

"But this awards scheme isn't just about our high-profile sports stars. It gives a chance to recognise people at grassroots level whose contributions behind the scenes are so important in making sure clubs across the city keep ticking over.

"This is why the awards scheme is so special. It recognises people of all ages and levels who contribute to sport in Swansea."

Other categories include primary school team of the year and young coach of the year.

You can download the nomination forms at www. swansea.gov.uk/sportsawards or by contacting Swansea Council's sports development team on 01792 635452. The closing date for nominations is Friday, October 19.
