PENSIONERS should be stripped of free bus travel as part of £15 billion of immediate extra savings to boost the economy, a think tank has said.

The Social Market Foundation said extra austerity measures projected for 2016/17 should be brought forward and the money ploughed into infrastructure.

It said carefully targeting where the axe fell would boost growth without increasing borrowing or damaging investor confidence. The £1 billion estimated annual cost of OAP travel passes was one low-priority item of spending that did nothing to improve the economy and should be scrapped, it said in a report.

“£15 billion! Really? Well, there's a coincidence, tax evasion costs the public purse over £15 billion per year... (http://tinyurl.com/72yjx5q) Why doesn't this so-called 'think tank' go after them, and leave pensioners alone!”

“the_busdriver - you're a bus driver, why are you allowing cheats to use other's passes? The disability cards are going to be cut in line with the number of people who are no longer able to claim disability benefits. I know someone who has a car, but can't afford to use it now he's lost his disabilty money and can't get a bus pass. Great when you're getting around with crutches.”

“Surely it would be saving more if they cut the number of politicans, with their riduculous salaries, pensions, plus all the expenses they can claim.
At least the majority of the ederly have paid income taxes and contributed a great deal to what was once a Great Britain”

“The so called OAP bus passes was originally a good idea, but the disability card came into play and at what point do you draw the line as to how much of a disability do you need to qualify for a free bus pass.
I have seen whole families with bus passes just because one in the family is entitled to it.

There are also the cheats who use their relatives bus passes fraudently.

Also the revenue to the bus companies as it is obvious they do not get the full cost per ticket or journey. (It would be interesting if someone could actually state how much the transport companies get).
What has made it worse is the cost of fuel rising nearly as quickly as utility fuel prices.

There may not be a public transport system after the next lot of cutbacks in April, anyone living outside of a large town or city may have to use shanks pony again.

I do not have any problems with contributing to the genuine people who are entitled to free passes but it is the "hanger ons" that get my back up.”

“Instead of giving them free bus passes, put their pensions up so they can afford it. I do think it's a waste of money for some pensioners. I know many who got passes and never used them, this is costing the tax payer. I am totally on the side of pensioners thou, they have worked hard all their lives and deserve a lot more than what they are having. I will say one good thing that came out of Labour, that they did look after the pensioners.”

“Perhaps this Country should spend less on over seas aid and start looking after our own. As for the un-elected bureaucrats who came out with this beauty shame on you!”

“The quickest and most effective way to cut budgets is to get rid of 250 to 300 MPs and their over inflated expenses claims - most companies have had to reduce staff numbers while those left have to absorb the extra workloads. We could also stop pumping money abroad and get out of overseas conflicts that are nothing to do with Britain - that would save millions of pounds and many lives”

What if a pensioner has an appointment at a hospital or clinic at "peak times"?
Will they have to pay full fare under your wonderful Socialist Plaid Cymru?”

“I was going to write in support of the bus passbut, after reading the posts where poor spelling is endemic perhaps it would be better to use the money on further education for adults in simple English Language.
Councillor Dunkley says only workers who pay taxes should use bus at peak time .I am a pensioner who pays taxes so why discriminate?”

“Once again it is the O.A.Ps who are targeted by these so called think tanks, why not start with our MPs, AMs, councillors and govornment departments. Cut their travel allowances, petrol allowances food and drink bills taxpayers pay for also furnishings our AMs and MPs they claim for morgages for second homes and then when they finish as MPs and AMs they either rent them or sell them on and keep the money. They should be made to pay the money they claimed for mogages back with interest and a percentage of the funiture or furnishings they have claimed for this would put millions back into the public purse and leave the O.A.Ps alone.”
