Nine arrested after Briton Ferry bookies raid
POLICE are continuing to investigate a robbery at a betting shop in Briton Ferry.
Nine people were arrested, including boys aged 13, 14 and 15, following the incident yesterday morning.
Police initially arrested five males following the incident, aged 15, 17, 23, 30 and 38.
But later in the day, a spokesman for South Wales Police said another four people — a 30-year-old man, and a woman, aged 25 and the 13 and 14-year-old — had also been arrested.
All were in custody at Neath Police Station as the Post went to print.
The incident took place at the Ladbrokes betting shop on Neath Road, at 9.07am.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said a male member of staff was threatened and the suspect made off with a quantity of cash. No-one was injured. An investigation into the incident is continuing.
Councillor Hugh James contacted the Post saying there were around six or seven police cars in the area in the morning. Briton Ferry East councillor, Colin Morgan, said he was disturbed at the incident happening in the middle of the town.
"It certainly does not sit nicely from where I am," he said.
"It's not what you expect to happen in your own town."
He said he had no concerns for the safety of residents in general, but said threats made to people working in the branch were unacceptable.
"I hope the person who was threatened is ok, my thoughts are with him and I'm glad he was not injured in any way.
"I am pleased with the quick response by the police," he said.
Town mayor, Susan Davies, said she was left shocked and horrified after hearing about the robbery.
"You don't expect it to happen in your own town, even when you hear about things like this happening.
"I don't know what's happening to Briton Ferry anymore to be honest, but it's nothing good."
The incident is the fourth of its kind to take place at a Ladbrokes branch in the South West Wales area in the past nine months.
In February, Trallwn and Bonymaen branches were targeted, while in June, Margam Road's branch in Taibach was also robbed.
