THE old Empire Cinema on Ropewalk Terrace, Neath, which has been purchased by Coastal Housing and is in the process of being demolished, has apparently been broken into recently. I understand that thieves gained access and stole a large metal ornate lighting pillar from the ground floor.

The council should be very concerned with this news; although as far as I am aware they did not own the building, it should be ringing alarm bells about safety.

In 2007 when a fire destroyed the Gwyn Hall there was no security in place. After the fire a security company was put in place 24/7 to protect the ruined building, which was too late.

I suggest Costal Housing are contacted urgently to ensure the Empire Cinema is protected. If there was a fire in this building, it would be extremely dangerous for the residents of Ropewalk Terrace.
