Woman dead and 11 injured in Cardiff hit-and-run

Police were today continuing to investigate a series of hit-and-runs in Cardiff which left one woman dead and 11 people injured.

The woman, who was fatally struck down at Cowbridge Road West, outside the fire station, has been named locally as 32-year-old Karina Menzies.

A 31-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of murder after he was arrested in the Welsh capital yesterday.

Police attended several locations in Ely and Leckwith after the first 999 call was logged at 3.30pm.

Eyewitnesses said pedestrians were deliberately targeted by someone driving a white van.

Officials were forced to close off the accident and emergency department at the University Hospital of Wales to anyone not involved in the incident, but it has now reopened.

Dr Grahame Shortland, medical director at the hospital, said the four adults and seven children being treated mostly had fractures and head injuries.

The ambulance service was yesterday liaising with hospitals in the region including The Royal Gwent and The Royal Glamorgan to convey emergency patients.

There were reports that Leckwith Retail Park was closed while ambulances attended. The A4160 Penarth Road in Llandough was also closed causing delays.

Eight emergency ambulances, five rapid response vehicles, four ambulance officers, two basics doctors and one Helimed attended several calls along Crossways Road, Cowbridge Road West, Grand Avenue, and Sloper Road.

Superintendent Julian Williams said: “This is a tragic incident that has affected a large number of people, and we thank the people of Cardiff for their help and support.

“Incidents like this are extremely rare here, as they are across south Wales, and we want to reassure the public that a significant number of officers are working on the investigation, including a number of specialist resources.

“Whether the actions were deliberate or reckless is a matter for the inquiry and the person will obviously be spoken to.”
