Wines for under a fiver
IF you think the credit crunch means you should not buy that bottle of wine - think again.
There are plenty of fantastic wines available for under a fiver and some of them are reviewed below.
What: Tesco Finest Fiano 2007

How much: £3.99, down from £5.99.
What it's like: A lovely clean, silky, full-bodied white with grapey, peachy flavours. Made from the traditional Sicilian variety of Fiano this is good for general drinking, or ideal with a plate of fish and chips.
What: Asda Chilean Chardonnay 2007

How much? £3.18
What it's like: A soft, peachy, off-dry New World Chardonnay for just over three quid — you can't go wrong.
What: Tesco Finest Nero D'Avola 2006

How much: £3.99, down from £5.99
What it's like: Made by Settesoli, one of Sicily's best producers, this smashing red is pumped full of chocolate and ripe plum flavours. Good with grilled meats.
What: Sainsbury's Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gascogne.

How much: £3.79
What it's like: A deliciously bright, lemony, sherbety dry white made from Colombard and Ugni Blanc grapes. One of the best value wines I've tasted all year — this stuff should be in every fridge.
What: Sainsbury's Old Vines Tempranillo 2007

What it's like: The Borja region of Spain is making some terrific reds at the moment but I've never seen one at this price before — a warm, open nose leads to lots dark fruits and a nice dry finish. Great value for money.
What: Gran Tesoro Rosado 2007

What it's like: Bursting with strawberry and raspberry fruit and just a hint of pepper, this delicious dry Spanish rose is a little blast of summer to brighten the autumn gloom.
What: Sainsbury's Portuguese Red

What it's like: Portugal is making some great value reds at the moment — this example is soft, but with a bit of structure, and is very drinkable. Made from a blend of traditional Portuguese varieties including Castelao and Aragonez.
What: Asda Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

What it's like: Another Chilean bargain — lots of juicy cassis and jammy flavours for not much money.
What: Ile la Forge Merlot 2007
Where: Aldi
How much: £4.99
What it's like: The whole of Aldi's Ile La Forge range of wines is worth trying, and this Merlot is no exception — a full bodied, ripe red with touches of spice and vanilla. A classy drop which tastes like it should cost more.
What: Bushland Reserve Australian Shiraz 2005
Where: Aldi
How much: £4.49
What it's like: All the tight, blackcurranty, herby fruit you want from a Hunter Valley Shiraz at a bargain price — an ideal autumn evening wine.
