What: Sainsbury's Old Vines Tempranillo 2007

Where: Sainsbury's

What it's like: The Borja region of Spain is making some terrific reds at the moment but I've never seen one at this price before — a warm, open nose leads to lots dark fruits and a nice dry finish. Great value for money.

What: Gran Tesoro Rosado 2007

Where: Tesco

How much: £3.29

What it's like: Bursting with strawberry and raspberry fruit and just a hint of pepper, this delicious dry Spanish rose is a little blast of summer to brighten the autumn gloom.

What: Sainsbury's Portuguese Red

Where: Sainsbury's

How much: £3.29

What it's like: Portugal is making some great value reds at the moment — this example is soft, but with a bit of structure, and is very drinkable. Made from a blend of traditional Portuguese varieties including Castelao and Aragonez.

What: Asda Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Where: Asda

How much: £3.18

What it's like: Another Chilean bargain — lots of juicy cassis and jammy flavours for not much money.

What: Ile la Forge Merlot 2007

Where: Aldi

How much: £4.99

What it's like: The whole of Aldi's Ile La Forge range of wines is worth trying, and this Merlot is no exception — a full bodied, ripe red with touches of spice and vanilla. A classy drop which tastes like it should cost more.

What: Bushland Reserve Australian Shiraz 2005

Where: Aldi
