Wind farms not wanted

I FIND Councillor Bayliss's comments (Stand up to Nimbys, Sep 14) on the Atlantic Array wind farm, arrogant and insulting to the residents and long-term councillors of Gower.

As a new councillor one of the first lessons he should learn is that he represents the views of the electors and should not use his position to follow his own personal agenda. I wonder how many permanent residents (not the transient student population of the Uplands Ward) support his views on wind farms in Gower? If I don't want them in my back yard then no-one else have them in theirs.

Wind farms are not cost effective and are propped up with vast government subsidies. Mr Bayliss should put his efforts into legislating that all new builds should incorporate solar panels. If he is looking for a worthy cause in his ward then do something about the chaotic road works on the major road into Uplands.

“Greenleaf1 I think you have hit the head right on the nail. The fact is climate change deniers always look at everything with one eye closed. They don't like the scientific evidence and chose only to believe the 1% of scientists(often paid by oil companies) who also are in denial about climate change.

For me the biggest concern is the almost £100 billion that will be spent cleaning up the contamination that will be left behind when our old nuclear reactors are closed. If the new ones ever get built, and it's still a big if, the cost for cleaning them up when they eventually close has been put at £250 billion. Just imagine what we could do with that sort of money. Sadly it wouldn't be most of us picking up the bill, but our children and grandchildren. By then Selina Pouillet will be long dead, like so many of her kind she doesn't care about what comes in the years to come, for her it's all about now.”

“Selina Pouillet, are you aware of the feed in tariff that those who have installed solar panels receive ? Is this not a subsidy ? Or the massive subsidies / tax breaks that the fossil fuel industry receives ? Then of course there is the decommissioning cost of £95 Bn for our aging and soon to be shut nuclear power stations, this is to be met by the tax payer. What about the aviation industry, they do not pay VAT on their fuel, is that not a subsidy ? If they paid VAT ( as do the rest of us when we buy fuel) would that business be viable ?
As is often the case with those that oppose wind power, your arguments are selective and misleading.
Wind power, both on and offshore, must a will play a key role in our energy mix, alongside other renewables and energy efficiency.”

“I'm sure Selina Pouillet will be moaning a great deal more with oil and gas prices doubling in the next 10 years. But of course that is 90% of the reason that her fuel prices have risen during the past 10 years. Very little to go with green energy, a lot more to do with peak oil and demand from China”
