THE bravery and dedication of mountain rescue teams has been recognised by the Welsh Government.

Sport Minister Huw Lewis paid tribute to the volunteers in the service across Wales.

He said: "I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding work that our mountain rescue teams carry out within Wales day in, day out, which allows local people and visitors in some of the most beautiful but dangerous parts of Wales to enjoy what our natural environment has to offer.

"The rescue teams are on stand-by 24/7, 365 days a year, whatever the conditions and put their own safety at risk during the course of their rescue operations.

"It is easy to forget that these are not paid employees of an emergency service, but volunteers, who not only give their time to help others but also to raise money for vital equipment and to raise awareness of safety in our hills and mountains for walkers and climbers."

He added: "Thank you to all of you who give up your time and energy to assist, rescue and save others."
