HUNDREDS and thousands of pages of Welsh historical newspapers have been made available online.

The National Library of Wales historical newspapers and journals project has been digitising historical Welsh newspapers and journals, some dating back to the early 19th Century. The scheme began in 2009 and 600,000 pages are now publicly available free of charge.

The Welsh Government has provided £2 million to the £3 million project which is digitising all of the National Library's paper holdings of out-of-copyright newspapers and journals, which are generally those published in Wales up to 1911 and comprising hundreds of different titles touching all corners of Wales.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "This highly ambitious project is about joining our past with our future, preserving how our nation's story was told in the printed press for generations to come, at a touch of a button."

“Just checked the NLW website - true, the newspapers are listed, however, access cannot be gained because of copyright problems!!!! So, we have a wonderful new resource which we cannot use because the NLW do not know who holds copyright for the newspapers listed!”

“As far as I am aware the only newspaper currently on-line is the Western Mail.....?? To be able to view historical news from the Cambrian and South Wales Evening Post would be fantastic - but they are not available, at least they were not there when I last used the site two weeks ago..??”
