Why is Welsh fair game?
THE new year has started with B Jones once again crowing about the decline in the number of Welsh speakers in Wales (Have Your Say, January 1).
How can the Evening Post claim to be a quality local Welsh community newspaper when it gives free rein to people such as him to denigrate the language spoken by many and in the past by the vast majority of Welsh people?
Would you print letters belittling one of the ethnic majority languages spoken here in Swansea? Of course not, but the Welsh language is fair game.

“After reading some of the ludicrous anti welsh language letters that are regularly sent in to the evening post I can only shake my head in disbelief at the writers fury that anyone would dare speak the welsh language.
I can only conclude that over time some non welsh speakers seem to develop a massive chip on their shoulder and their attitude seems to be, "I can't speak welsh therefore no one else should be allowed to speak welsh", however after spending afew days with welsh speaking friends in a village where english used to be the only language spoken, I can confirm that the welsh language is alive and well and is,thankfully, here to stay.”

“Would like to comment but am censored for some reason. No freedom of speech apparently in Wales or perhaps you must speak Welsh to get away with comments the censor cant understand.”

“I only wish I had been taught Welsh, here in America we have no opportunity, at least in Wales you have the chance to learn and speak in your native tongue while here we have to listen to these blithering idiots and their hip hop sing song version of pidgin English they call ghetto talk.”

“What i find is quite funny is when English people move to wales because of non English speaking incomers moving to England. They when they come to Wales these very same people refuse to learn Welsh. Just goes to show what kind of people the English are, and also goes a long way to explain why they are so disliked in Wales, and everywhere else for that matter. Not that being disliked would worry them, arrogance is often they're middle name lol”

“Mr Campbell, I think you misrepresent what is being said. The pro Welsh language lobby are constantly answering criticism of how much money is being spent on propping up the Welsh language by saying that it is a vibrant part of the culture of Wales and more and more people are supporting it.
However when the facts show the opposite, all people like Mr Jones is doing is to ask you to remove your rose tinted spectacles and look at what is really happening. To then denigrate him for doing so is rather childish.
My own position on the language is that it would be a shame if it died out completely, however like the Manx language and Cornish it would not signify the earth opening up and swallowing Wales in the event that it did.
What puts a lot of people off the Welsh language is the type of people who support it. Judging by the sort of comments we get on these boards about anyone who dares to voice another opinion, I think most people take the 'I''m not supporting anything he is attitude'.
We never read of why these people support Welsh, just an abusive, racist rant against the English.”

“The Welsh language talkes hundreds of millions of pounds out of the Welsh economy for the benefit of a few thousand people. It's an unnecessary drain on the country that would grain from the money being spent on everyone who lives here.
Everyone is entitled to have an opinion on Welsh, as the whole population is paying for it - despite it dying out at an ever increasing rate.
Face it, the seeds of doom have been well and truly planted, when children who've been educated through the medium of Welsh choose to speak English outside of the classroom. And more to the point are being told they must speak Welsh outside of the classroom. So much for the Welsh Not.”

“Quite right. It seems you can say anything about Wales and the welsh and we just have to take it. Say anything about any other group and your a racist straight away. And say something about the English and your lower than a snakes belly”
