Welsh demand is unspeakable
LEIGH Richards requests a reply to his letter (Have Your Say, October 19).
Everybody in Wales can read, write and speak English — a minority of 10 per cent can also speak Welsh, five per cent can read and write it.
Demanding service in Welsh in Wales is like demanding service in English in France or Germany.
The rest of the world is either already speaking English or learning it as fast as they can because it is the world language of the present and the future.

“Maxmin Perhaps its your sense of inferiority which animates your little Englander attitude and prejudice, towards the welsh language and those that speak it?. I speak English and have no ill feelings towards people who speak English and wouldn't dare write into a national newspaper and insult the language. Yet that's what Mr Gwilym Levell and other like minded bigots do regular. Perhaps Welsh speakers themselves should accept the infantile abuse of stand-up comics yourself included and other loveless intellectuals with a shrug of the shoulders and an indulgent smile, it seems The last permitted (in fact, it is encouraged)bigotry is anti-welsh language bigotry myself I would say its racism., to pseudo-economic 'factoids' about how the English subsidize the Welsh - none of which is supported. As for the so-called economic contribution of Wales, we might consider how much of the wealth Wales generated in mining and steel for Great Britain it actually kept for itself (hardly any), and what it got in return for putting generations of its people to work down mines (very little - except for the odd lecture from the Welsh-hating Anglo-welsh). We might also think about the drowning of Welsh villages to provide water for English cities, and the mockery the protestors received when they went to make their case (they were told they had no culture, were spat at and mocked in the streets of Liverpool, etc). When you look at the minority-culture-hating rubbish on this comments site, I'm astounded Welsh speakers have managed to stay as tolerant as they have. . One of the reasons I and many others who live in Wales (whether Welsh, English or whatever) would like to see Wales move towards more self-government is so that we don't have to have Wales dictated to by the kind of people who write on here who have so liberally paraded their bigotry and ignorance on this site.”

“Oh dear any chance of reasoned debate has now gone with muckywind taking the stage. Honestly sometimes I think he is a plant by the Anti Welsh Language society as no-one in their right minds would want to be associated with any cause that he supports with his ranting and raving!
Muckywind you must learn that all debates are like pieces of paper - they have two sides!
Jiffys wonders, if you speak Welsh every day with your colleagues then that is the way to keep it alive. Use it, spread the word, invite people to join you and you will be amazed how much interest in the language you generate. Unfortunately a lot of the good work you are doing in keeping Welsh alive and thriving is being undone by zealots like muckywind who can't debate the subject calmly, but instead just launch into a foul mouth tirade against anyone who doesn't agree with him.”

“Dead is it Jiffy? - that's why I speak Welsh everyday with dozens of people in my workplace who prefer to speak in that language. That's why numbers are up 5% in the last 20 years is it? That's probably why Levell is probably clutching at straws again with his hopeless stats. You sound like Gwilym (honestly I can't get over the irony of that name) Levell - hopelessly mired in ignorance like the rest of the Anti-Cymraeg nut brigade!”

“Jiffy no you didn't strike a nerve mate .I'm immune and have a natural resistance, now
to narrow minded dick-heads like your kind. The ones who spout and write their narrow minded rubbish on here. Oh! I'm so glad that there's a place that you can learn Chinese it's a shame that you are such a poor pee-pot of a Welshman that you couldn't learn your native tongue! You would have found it a Very useful language in Pontardawe." Shame that my wenglish friend.;)”

“Jiffy why don't you and Gwilym Levell get a room you both sound like a couple of morons. Talk about small minded and bigoted I just love the English language fanatics and nuts like yourself jiffy and Gwilym Levell we get on here. You people just want to write your bigoted views and insult you have the cheek to call our language dead which is welsh be you English speaking or welsh speaking which is a lie because it's a breathing living language no thanks to idiots like yourselves You talk about The rest of the world speaking English or learning it. What a moron If I were you I would start learning Mandarin Chinese - because 882 million use it as a primary or first language speaker use this language. Compare that to English - where some 312 million speak it and not as a 1st language more like a 3rd or 4 language so why bother speaking English because will not belong before it's a dead language ??”

“Gwilym Levell, you are wasting your time talking sense when it comes to the Welsh language nuts. Too many of them have a vested interest in keeping the dead language alive and they will fight like cornered rats to ensure it continues to cost the majority of us a fortune in unwanted signs, paperwork and whatever else they can force upon us.”
