Kevin Brennan, the Labour Member of Parliament for Cardiff West & the Shadow Minister for Schools, wrote on social networking and microblogging site Twitter: “So sad to hear of the death of cricketer Tom Maynard of Surrey and formerly Glamorgan - a tragic loss of such a talented young man”.
Meanwhile Alec Stewart, ex-Surrey CCC & England Cricketer, wrote: “We've sadly lost a lovely lad who had the talent to be something very special. My thoughts go out to the Maynard Family. RIP Tom”.
And Luke Wells, professional cricketer at Sussex CCC, wrote: “Genuinely feel completely empty and gutted today, in utter shock about the news of Tom Maynard. An incredible talent and amazing guy”.
The incident will be referred to the police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
British Transport Police, which is investigating what happened, said the sportsman’s death was not being treated as suspicious.
Maynard joined Surrey from Glamorgan last season, and was selected for the England Lions last winter.
Starting in Glamorgan’s Under-17s side at the age of 15, Maynard had reached the Glamorgan 2nd XI and was playing for the Wales Minor Counties team by the time he was 16.
Maynard signed a three-year deal to play for Surrey for the 2011 season.
