THE Welsh Government should go ahead with the purchase of Cardiff Airport, but plan long term for a new Severnside Airport to replace Cardiff and Bristol, according to a new study carried out for the Institute of Welsh Affairs.

Co-operate

The study, by aviation consultants MSP Solutions, says that Wales and the West of England should co-operate to promote a state-of-the-art, 24-hour Severnside passenger and cargo airport that would serve the whole of southwest Britain.

The proposal will be submitted to the UK Government's Airports Commission, which is looking at the issue of airport capacity in London.

But it has also been asked "to take account of the national, regional and local implications of any proposals".

The report says there is a danger that decisions on airport provision in London could result in what it describes as "a serious worsening of air connectivity for Wales and the West of England."

Yes, it's true that Cardiff Airport has BA maintenance base, and yes 747's fly in and out. However, they only fly in and out empty, from/to Heathrow/Manchester/Gatwick and other BA used airports in the UK.
A fully laden 747 couldn't fly to Mexico or the West coast of America from Cardiff nor Bristol Airport.”

“Zoomer, you are actually half-right. Bristol does have a short runway, but Cardiff's is long enough to accommodate long-haul aircraft, including 747s, hence British Airways' long-haul maintenance centre is located at Cardiff Airport.”

You moan about having to fork out an extra £100 to £200 to get to your airport, whereas if there was a Severnside Airport. The aircraft you need to fly to " USA, Mexico or the Caribbean" would have a long enough runway to fly non-stop. It's because Bristol and Cardiff Airports don't have longrunways that they can only run flights that just about scrape to you desired destinations.
Finally, airports live or die by the Airlines. If some consortium were to build a Severnside Airport and offer the Airlines the best long term deal, the Airlines would ditch Bristol and Cardiff in a minute.”

“Zoomer of course it wouldn't be u would it, blame the EP. What a clown. BTW it cost billion to build a new airport and there would have to be an agreement to close both existing ones first”

“Sorry about two duplicate posts. The EP website was having a hiccup/glitch or something.”

“Perhaps the Welsh Government should look at a new Severn Estuary airport, and not buy Cardiff Airport for £50 million to £100 million. A lot of information is available on this scheme. I remember reading about the proposal in the 1970's.Taking off and flying out into the estuary, would diminish the dis-advantages of Noise Abatement Rules on aircraft.
But then again, if you're a Labour government, why not waste money, it's what you do !”

“It is madness having two small airports right next to each other(Bristol and Cardiff). Most of the holidays that i take are the other side of the pond, be they in USA, Mexico or the Caribbean. To get to these places i have to fly from London or the midlands, i'm looking at an extra £100-200 even before i get to the airport.”
