LLANELLI Warriors finally began 2013 with an impressive win at Pontyates.

Despite an unfamiliar backline, the Llanelli team, who include players with learning difficulties, managed to put together some effective rugby.

The heavy conditions suited the visitors and it was no surprise that No. 8 Simon Jenkins got the opening score.

The Warriors pack did struggle to get about the field, though, and so it was lucky that centre Gareth Ladd needed no support when he was given a chance and crossed unaided.

Pontyates were stung into action, with Dewi Williams and Gareth Davies going well. They hit back through Jamie Cooper, but the Warriors scored again to keep daylight between the sides at half-time.

The Warriors seemed to have the edge in the tight stuff and although Pontyates's backs looked sharper, the conditions meant this was a crucial advantage.

A series of forward drives saw Derrick Morgan pop over from close range.

Captain Eric Horridge kept his men on the front foot and Gareth McKibbon played a full part for the Warriors, but Pontyates also kept playing, and with Gareth Williams running strongly, Cooper crossed twice to complete an impressive hat-trick.

The game was back in the balance, but the Warriors weren't to be denied.

Alun Stephens got bogged down a bit but Nathan Lawson, playing out of position at centre, got the final score of the game and made the result safe for the Warriors.

Llanelli Warriors: Jon Kerr, Richard Evans, Nathan Lawson, Gareth Ladd, Ryan Morgan, Kevin Morgan, Lee Rowlands, Gareth McKibbon, Eric Horridge (capt), Colin Talcon, John Horwood, Darren Pollitt, Chris Hancock, Simon Jenkins, Mike Seignot.
