Warm welcome for people who crave company at Christmas
FOR those who enjoy Christmas Day with family, friends, food and drink, it is easy to forget the many elderly people who spend the festive time alone.
But not volunteers from one church in Ammanford, who are devoting the day to making sure these people have something to look forward to.

Ammanford Evangelical Church, based in Wind Street, is offering to pick people up, cook them a Christmas dinner, and give them a parcel of gifts — all for free.
Sammy Davies, assistant pastor at the church, said: "It's a horrible thought that, while others are sat around the table with all the family, there are people spending Christmas alone year after year.
"Our free Christmas dinner is aimed at people who are going to be on their own."
The event has been running for a number of years, but this year is due to be bigger than ever.
"The people love it really," Mr Davies added.
"The fact that there's a good number of people each year shows that."
He said the church is expecting around 70 people to come to this year's meal, which is held at the Pensioners' Hall, in Quay Street.
"We are willing to offer transport as well and if people want us to come and get them they can phone up and book," he added. "Having said that, people turn up on the day and we would never turn anyone away."
The church is willing to pick people up from as far as Tycroes and Brynaman.
The big-hearted scheme will swing into action on Christmas Eve, with some volunteers preparing food throughout the night.
Then, on December 25 itself as many as 30 people will give up their own festive holiday to try to make sure no one in the Amman Valley spends the day alone.
Mr Davies said they have been doing this for a number of years, but this time they are planning on giving people a little something extra.
"The other thing we have been getting people to get involved with is these gift parcels," he said.
"Every year we have been giving a little present to those who turn up for the meal.
"In the past it has just been quite small, like a chocolate orange.
"But this year we have been asking members of the congregation to fill these gift bags."
This all may sound like a huge effort, but Mr Davies said the volunteers made it easy.
"By now, the Christmas Day meal is something we don't have to put any effort into.
"The work of the volunteers means it just runs itself."
If you would otherwise spend Christmas Day alone, you can book a place, as well as transport if required, by calling 01269 593182.
It will run from 1pm to 3.30pm on Christmas Day at Ammanford Pensioners' Hall, in Quay Street.
