Wanderers make double swoop ahead of new season
CARMARTHEN Wanderers have bolstered their squad ahead of the new season.
Talented young wicketkeeper-batsman Rhys Thomas has joined from Gowerton, while experienced all-rounder Gareth Grant — who works in Carmarthen — has joined the club from Neath.
All-rounder Leighton Walters has been appointed captain and he will be assisted by vice-captain Gareth Thomas.
The club have received a boost with the highly-rated Daniel Jones remaining with the club despite offers from Premier League sides.
The Wanderers are ready to start preparations for the forthcoming season.
The seniors are having nets at Carmarthen Leisure Centre on March 4 and every following Sunday to March 25.
Nets then move outdoors in April to the four-lane net facility at Trinity Fields.
The Wanderers open their league season at Stradey Park against Llanelli and have been drawn against local rivals Bronwydd in the League Cup.
They make the long trip north to Machen in the Welsh Cup.
Chairman Ray Harley will again focus on producing good quality wickets at Trinity Fields, which last season proved very fruitful for batsmen, as the ground produced more runs than any other wicket in the division.
Captain Walters said: "The season is fast approaching and we are looking forward to being very competitive in a tough league.
"There are many local derbies which will add spice to the season and the boys are really looking forward to our
cup game against Bronwydd.
"There has been huge interest in our match-day sponsorship which these derby games have generated and the players are really excited by the challenges that await us during the summer."
