A CALL has gone out for the Wales Government to step back and re-think its plans for incinerators throughout Wales.

The move comes after the Stop Newport Incinerator Campaign (SNIC) was successful in halting such a project in that city.

Robert Hepworth, chairman of SNIC, said new technologies were available, and the amount of waste being produced was going down year on year.

He added: "This is a victory for SNIC and the whole local community in beating off a waste incinerator at Llanwern which would have scarred our health and environment for the next 30 years."

Pippa Bartolotti, of the Wales Green Party, said: "The Wales Government must end its love affair with burning. The waste should not be burned. It is a valuable resource which will be needed more and more as the cost in terms of environmental degradation and in terms of hard cash make mining and drilling less desirable."

The group also said that from an EU perspective, incineration was now seen as harmful to recycling.
