Wait goes on for clubs
ANOTHER reconvened Welsh Football League AGM will be staged at the Aberavon Beach Hotel on Monday (7pm).
Last week the first reconvened meeting staged in Cardiff ended with the 54 member clubs taking the issue back to the Welsh FA (WFA).
Their proposal was to stick with 54 clubs which flew in the face of a WFA proposal to cut the league to 50 clubs, comprising 16-strong divisions one and two with 18 in division three.
But it is thought likely that the WFA will stick to its guns, and recommend a league based around 50 clubs.
It means clubs like Garden Village — who play in division one — are still waiting for their fixture lists ahead of the new season.
The sticking point surrounds two clubs — Risca and Pontyclun — who brought in lawyers to successfully win a WFA appeal and avoid relegation.
They took issue with the league management committee a year ago stating that clubs who failed to meet criteria would be relegated ahead of those who finished in the relegation spots.
But the league management committee issued a statement, declaring that all 54 member clubs now met criteria.
In the case of Risca, they finished below all three clubs set to be axed — Seven Sisters, Llantwit Fardre and Troedyrhiw.
To most clubs that is an unacceptable state of affairs, but in order to make progress the argument will have to be ditched.
The league was due to get under way on Saturday week, but that is now unlikely.
Fixture lists have yet to be issued while the draw for the league's Nathanial Car Sales Cup hasn't been made.
And the situation is also impacting on the leagues that feed into the Welsh League, as they have been dragged into the deadlock.
"During the close season there is normally only bits and pieces to tidy up, but this summer has been dominated by appeals," said a Welsh League spokesman.
"For the good of the game, and for the leagues below us, progress will have to be made at the third meeting next Monday.
"Though it remains unjust for clubs below those relegated to remain in the league, we simply have to move on."
The original AGM staged in Bridgend on June 26 ended without relegation and promotion issues being discussed because legal action from Risca and Pontyclun was pending.
