Stadium just before Christmas.
After being rushed to the A&E department at University
of Wales in Cardiff, he was transferred to Princess of Wales
Hospital in Bridgend, where tests revealed he needed an angiogram. (cor)
The procedure, which allows doctors to look inside a
person's arteries, took place at the specialist cardiac unit at Morriston,
where Mr Lewis spent three days as a patient.
He said: "The quality of care, the science and the attitude
of everyone I encountered was simply outstanding. It was a humbling but also an
uplifting experience.
"The logistics and the management surrounding this week and
between the four hospitals was flawless. To witness at first hand an
equality of care delivered at such a high level was simply magnificent."
Mr Lewis, who was appointed as chief executive of the
WRU in 2006, added his experience of American health system 20 years ago
made him realise how vital the NHS is.
He said: "It was in the late 1990s and it was a very serious
car accident.
"I was admitted to hospital in New York and I was quite
badly injured. But in A&E I was asked to prove my identity and provide a
credit card.
"They even rang my wife back in the UK to get proof that I
was who I said I was before I could have treatment. The quality of care was
being driven solely by my ability to pay.
"Even then, they missed a snapped ligament. It wasn't
spotted and I flew back in pain with a ruptured cruciate ligament.
"That puts into our national health service into such stark
contrast. We expect a lot from our NHS because we've set the bar so high in
terms of the quality of service it provides. But we need to be sensitive and
understanding to the demands we put on NHS staff. Our NHS is special and we all
must look after it with the care and respect it deserves."

“I have said it before and will say it again. Each time I have been so ill I have needed hospital treatment I HAVE always had tremendous treatment in Morriston Hospital. There have been others on the ward who feel they should have special treatment but thankfully these are in a minority.
and like Hudgodboss andcresswell 1.I have nothing but thanks for the staff.”

“Totally agree with Roger Lewis here. Our NHS gets lots of criticism and negative comments (you only have to listen to people), but in all honesty we really need to be grateful for the work it does and appreciate all the services offered. Maybe some of us need to go to other countries and experience their medical care before we grumble about this amazing facility we have in the UK.”
