Villas-Boas: Tottenham will not be distracted for Swansea City visit
ANDRE Villas-Boas insists Tottenham will not be distracted by the intense transfer speculation surrounding the club ahead of tomorrow’s game against Swansea City.
Spurs have broken their transfer record twice this summer, spending heavily as they seemingly prepare for life without Gareth Bale.
The Welsh winger is close to sealing a world-record move to Real Madrid, reportedly worth around £93 million.
Tottenham seemed poised to sign Anzhi winger Willian as a potential replacement for Bale, but Chelsea appear to have hijacked that transfer and the Brazilian is set to move to Stamford Bridge.
Regardless of the numerous stories and rumours, however, Villas-Boas is confident his players will not lose focus against Swansea.
“I don’t think the team will be distracted by the transfers,” said Villas-Boas.
“What we’ve done so far has been great activity. We managed to bring in almost all the players we want and will continue to work to strengthen the squad.
“The players look very determined to achieve our objectives this season because of last season’s tally of points and not being able to achieve it.
“We will continue to be focused on our objectives, so we transfer back to the Premier League against Swansea which is extremely important.”
Spurs struggled against Swansea without Bale last season, having to rely on Jan Vertonghen’s late goal for a 1-0 win at White Hart Lane.
But this bolstered Tottenham squad should be better equipped without the Welshman, and Villas-Boas is pleased with how his new-look side has gelled.
“It’s just the beginning, so for the team to perform like that was something very good,” he said after Thursday’s 5-0 victory over Dinamo Tbilisi in the Europa League.
“Considering the trip, the time difference and our efforts against Crystal Palace (on Sunday), I’m extremely pleased. The body is tired but the mind is happy, absolutely.
“It is a long trip but we have enough time to recover. I think we will be fresh for Swansea.”
