VILLAGERS in the Dulais Valley were out in force today to support their parish church, which was damaged in a suspected arson attack.

They have already been digging deep to donate cash towards the cost of repairing St Mary's Church in Seven Sisters.

The fire, which happened in July, left residents angry and upset — but out of bad came some good as they banded together to form the Friends of Seven Sisters, to support the church and other community causes.

Today the group is staging its first big fundraising event, a duck race and fun day at the Nantycafan Playing Fields.

Seven Sisters councillor Stephen Hunt said: "There has already been a fantastic response. We have sold almost 1,000 ducks.

"We are damming the river for the race and people are setting up stalls and tables to sell things.

"There is a bouncy castle for the kids and the Nantycafan Social Club is open throughout the day.

"Nearly every community group you can think of is getting involved.

"The entire village has rallied round. Just about everybody will be out, enjoying the sun and raising money for a wonderful cause."

St Mary's was one of two buildings — the other a house under construction — damaged in a suspected double arson attack during the early hours of Sunday, July 4.

Several important features, including the altar and a table, were damaged. An irreplaceable Mothers' Union banner was destroyed, and the church was left reeking of smoke.

A man was later arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.

The Friends group is initially raising money to cover the £500 insurance excess, but will then look to fund other repairs that were already needed to the church, particularly its roof and stonework.

Today's event was due to start at noon and will continue until around 6pm.

"It was terrible what happened, but at least something good has come out of something so bad," said Mr Hunt.
