Victim of cruel burglary 'scared and vulnerable'
TWO Swansea men have been jailed for a cruel distraction burglary at a woman's home that has left the female victim feeling scared and vulnerable.
Daniel Davies and Daniel Allen stole a necklace, and a purse containing £50 and various bankcards in the Dyfed Avenue incident in Townhill, a judge was told.
Davies, aged 25, of Pant-y- Celyn Road, Townhill, and Allen, aged 21, of Carig Gardens, Mayhill, admitted joint involvement in the burglary when they appeared at Swansea Crown Court. Allen further pleaded guilty to possessing two £10 wraps of heroin when he was on bail for the crime.
Christopher James, prosecuting, said the men's victim was 56-year-old Elizabeth Thomas, who lived alone.
A few weeks earlier, Davies had introduced himself to her and she had agreed to pay him £5 for cleaning her windows.
They also discussed some work that needed to be done in her garden.
The court heard that on the afternoon of February 1, Miss Thomas heard a knock at her front door and found Davies standing there with Allen.
Allen was holding boxes containing a children's paddling pool and other things, and both men entered the house after Davies pushed Miss Thomas out of the way.
Inside, Davies asked if she wanted to buy any of the items in the boxes, but Miss Thomas made it clear she was not interested.
Davies then asked for a glass of water, and Miss Thomas agreed to fetch one from the kitchen.
Davies followed her into the kitchen, leaving Allen on his own in the living room, said Mr James.
A short time later, the men left and Miss Thomas discovered that a necklace had disappeared and her purse was missing.
When arrested, Davies and Allen blamed each other for taking the items. The court heard that in a victim-impact statement, Miss Thomas said the incident had left her feeling scared and vulnerable.
Mr James said that on May 5, when Allen was on bail, police executed a warrant at a house in Clase, Swansea, and caught him in possession of two wraps of heroin.
Judge Christopher Morton jailed Davies for 18 months and Allen for 20 months after saying of the Townhill incident: "This was a distraction burglary that was premeditated, and both of you played a part in it. Your victim was a woman living alone and what happened had a significant impact on her."
