Vans do not offer value
I AM writing in response to a recent report (Post, January 26) on rural response vans.
As a former firefighter with over 30 years' experience, I believe senior managers of the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have missed the points that have quite rightly been raised in your newspaper regarding rural response vans.
The issues of the vans' use in the weather and terrain that they have recently been utilised in has never been raised.
The issue has been their reliability and effectiveness as front line fire-fighting appliances.

With the cost of this fleet of vans ranging into several millions, 25 per cent of the Swansea input into the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service cash coffers is, in my opinion, not good value for money for tax payers, of whom I am one, in that the only successful work that can be undertaken by the vans is transportation, towing and light fire fighting duties.
I am sure that a fleet of 4x4s could achieve precisely these actions at a fraction of the cost.
