VIDEO: Swansea City secure 5-1 win over Petrolul Ploiesti
SWANSEA City have one foot in the Europa League group stages after thumping Petrolul Ploiesti 5-1 in their Europa League play-off first leg match at the Liberty Stadium.
Only a disaster in Romania next week can prevent the Swans progressing on their return to Continental Competition following a 22-year absence.
It was clear almost from the outset that Michael Laudrup's side would prove too strong for their visitors.
Laudrup's post match press conference:
They were ahead after just 14 minutes when Michu dummied a Jonjo Shelvey free-kick and Wayne Routledge's shot smashed into the net via a deflection off defender Ovidiu Hoban.
That lead was doubled midway through the first period as Routledge turned provider, sending in a centre that a sliding Hernandez fired against the keeper.
Michu was first to react, powering the ball high into the net.
The goals kept coming, Routledge, free at the far post, headed in a pinpoint Hernandez cross, and the tie looked over inside 25 minutes.
Cosmin Contra post-match press conference:
At that point people were delving into the history books, believing a record win could be on the cards.
Wilfried Bony claimed the next goal just past the hour, though replays suggested it was knocked in by goalkeeper Pecanha.
And Alejandro Pozuelo came off the bench to supply a deft finish to Michu's subtle pass.
At that point Laudrup was celebrating a win that equalled his best ever, the 5-0 thrashing of Queens Park Rangers a year ago.
But Petrolul's star man Gheorghe Grozav produced a stunning overhead kick to convert Guilherme's cross and hand the Romanians a scrap of consolation.
