THE long wait is over for students across South West Wales as they pick up their GCSE results today.

YSGOL BRYN TAWE:
Students at Ysgol Bryn Tawe were once again celebrating excellent GCSE results today . Despite concerns about Welsh pass rates in Maths, English and Science, Bryn Tawe results were well above national averages, with 91 % of students getting at least 5 GCSEs grades A*-C, 66% getting 5 A*-C including Welsh/English and Maths and 98% achieving the Level 1 threshold of 5 GCSE A*-G. Amongst the top performing girls were Leanne Ward with 6 A* and 5 As, Lauren Buckmaster with 3 A* and 8As and Manon Grocott with 5 A *, 4Bs and a C. Top performing boys included Emyr Meek with 10 A* and an A, Rhys Underdown with 8 A*, 2A and a B as well as an A grade in AS Music and Cellan Ellis with 8 A* and 3As.
Headteacher Graham Daniels said “ The results this year reflect the hard work and dedication of pupils and staff and I am delighted and proud to acknowledge this wonderful success which provides an excellent foundation for entry in to our Sixth Form”
As a school we have enjoyed record breaking results. The level 2 threshold is 77% and the level 2 including English and maths is 63%. This is 5% higher than last year’s result which was our highest yet.

Year 11 pupils at Ysgol Maesydderwen are once again celebrating their outstanding GCSE and BTEC results which have maintained the massive gains achieved last year. The excellent results include 67% of the Year 11 pupils achieving 5 A* - C grades with 58% attaining 5 A* - C grades including GCSE English and Maths. 99.5% of pupils achieved A* - G grades.
There were some excellent individual successes including Francesca Burdett, Callum Close, Georgia Evans, Kira Evans and Abbie Lodwick who achieved a total of 17 A*, 35 A and 5 B grades between them. In addition, Catrin Norton, achieved 11 A* and 1 A grade. Catrin, who is a rising star of the sports world, achieved her success while also carrying out her duties as a Gold Sports Ambassador for Powys and she has also just been made Powys’ first Platinum Sports Ambassador.
Headteacher, Mrs Speedy, said, “We are delighted with this year’s results and that we have maintained the substantial gains that we achieved last year.”
Many pupils have decided to continue their studies in the Sixth Form at Ysgol Maesydderwen where they will be able to continue their studies in a new state of the art building which opened last September. While there they will be able to complete the Welsh Baccalaureate alongside A Levels and higher BTEC qualifications.
