THE health service trade union Unison has warned against the dangers of pressurising managers to meet financial targets which could affect patient care.

The union's concerns have been raised following recent comments by Welsh Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths that health boards may be removed if they do not stay within their financial budget.

It comes as the Stafford Hospital Report identified the meeting of financial targets formed part of the appalling crisis in healthcare in Staffordshire.

Unison regional organiser, Jeff Baker said while we shouldn't compare the system entirely with Stafford he added: "Threatening the complete removal of health boards purely on a financial basis could put pressure all the way down the management line to make rash decisions to meet budgets before patient care."

Unison believes hospital management and the Welsh Government is struggling to cope with the increasing demands of patient care and says it would be helpful if the minister clarified her position to avoid further uncertainty.

“'If I can run a toilet roll factory I can run a hospital' were the words spoken on TV by a manager & we're reaping the result.
Spending on the NHS has doubled since 1999 & still increasing so it would appear to be bad management of resources is a problem.
A program on TV showed how so many managers controlled a operating theatre, overruling each other, not the staff. Just a typical instance: the staff were happy to possibly take a late lunch to carry out an operation but were overruled so sat around from 10:30 to 12:00, official lunch time, doing nothing.”
