THE Farmers' Union of Wales has criticised a Swansea AM who proposed overturning plans for a badger cull in north Pembrokeshire.

Peter Black, who is also a Swansea county councillor for Cwmbwrla, had tabled a motion at the Senedd with three other members to annul the badger control area Wales order, which supporters say is necessary for the eradication of bovine TB in Wales.

The proposal was rejected by 42 votes to 8.

FUW member and north Pembrokeshire farmer Brian Thomas, said: "The overwhelming support for the policy is welcome, and gives a clear sign that the majority of AMs are prepared to grasp the nettle and act responsibly regarding a severe disease crisis, despite misleading campaigns by animal rights activists.

"However, I was stunned by the inaccuracy and misleading nature of some of the statements made by those proposing the motion to stop the cull.

"Mr Black quoted what he described as the latest date published by the Independent Science Group in February 2010, yet that group was disbanded almost four years ago, and he chose to quote data and conclusions which he knows were superseded and corrected in July 2010."

Mr Thomas also hit out at rock star Brian May for his involvement in the anti-cull campaign.

He said: "Brian May describes TB as a virus. This is so inaccurate it is like describing cattle as a species of fish.

"Thankfully, the majority of AMs have taken a step back, properly assessed the evidence, and supported the cull".

But Mr Black said: "I quoted data published by members of the science group published in July 2010 which has been verified by other scientists.

"I am appalled the FUW is trying to make this issue into a personality contest, when it is about the best way to tackle TB and clearly the evidence shows a cull will not do that.

"Trials of vaccination in Gloucester show that is the best way forward. I think the FUW has lost the plot and are creating division instead of thinking of the best interests of the countryside."

“Well, Philip, Swansea, whats wrong with townies then? at least we dont shuffle cattle all over for such trivia as competitions and then blame a wild species when TB spreads, nor do townies send healthy cattle to slaughter to cover up for diseased cattle that are more profitable, milk prices to farmers should come down to pay for the DNA now necessary because of them swapping tags but NO the townie will have to contribute more tax and risk his/her health when buying milk for a cup of tea. You dont know what you are eating/drinking, red tractor? what a con trick, never mind tobacco you'll soon cough drinking milk as farmers buy another gas guzzling tank and put another great building up on the farm without plans, like the one just caught out living in a so called "barn" townies cant flout planning like that so perhaps we are not so good, at fiddling anyway LONG LIVE THE BADGER-CULL THE CATTLE, as they say in Norfolk, "you never see a farmer on a bike"”

“Are these the same farmers that knew best when the fed infected brains to the cattle and exposed us to cjd?”

“Tony, Skewen - You must be a towny, because you haven't got a clue what you are talking about!

How do Farmers know better than scientists? Well perhaps the farmers have worked the land for generations and listen to what scientists say and have seen with their own eyes what has proven effective?

And you must realise that foxes are still hunted, maybe not with dogs but still with rifle. Or are you truly that ignorant despite living no further than 2 miles from farmland throughout Skewen!”

“Culling is the animal world¿s equivalent of slash and burn. Scientifically it has proven to be ineffective in preventing the spread of bovine TB. Of course, farmers want a quick fix. However, we need to look at the overall picture, which includes the farmers view but not exclusively. In the same way that a farmer would not question a vet with regards the treatment of his cattle, I suggest that they also do not interfere with scientists in their technical research.”

“Don't worry soon it will be the turn of the badgers to be slaughtered, most of them healthy. And we will still have infected cattle, as this is a cattle disease. Cattle get slaughtered whether they have TB or not, that's what they are bred for. No disrespect to farmers, but how can they know more than the scientists about this? Do we really want a countryside free from wildlife? After the badgers, it'll be the fox's turn to be hunted!”

“As usual, the townies think they know better than the professionals in the Countryside. Let them all attend the slaughter of Cattle unfortunate enough to have been infected with TB.”

“Liam, the majority of the welsh taxpayers do not want a badger cull. It will be very expensive and according to independant scientists (not the government cronies), it will most probably make the problem worse by sick badgers fleeing to areas outside the cull zone. Farmers want a quick fix (understandable) and think a cull will solve their problems. There is no magic solution - only by the strict biosecurity measures that are now enforced, and by a vaccination programme will this terrible disease that is crippling farmers be beaten.”

“The farmers know much more about their land than that of the welsh assembly sat in Cardiff. Cull the badgers if that¿s what the farmers say. They should all get out in the tractors and protest outside the assembly building. Listen to the taxpayes.”

“How can Brian Thomas say there is overwhelming support for this policy in Wales, when the figures from the WAG'S public consultation revealed that opponents to a cull outnumbered supporters by four to one? It's just another case of the pro farming assembly members ignoring their constituent's wishes and that of the latest defra statistics that show a decline of 45% in numbers of cattle destroyed because of bTB. This decline was achieved by stricter testing and movement controls, and not one badger was culled. The future to beating bTB is by a cattle vaccination programme, and every effort should be in pursuit of that and not a mass slaughter of our native wildlife. Now the Badger Trust will mount another legal challenge, and if they win again it will be us the taxpayer who will have to pay the huge legal fees again! The Trust has a very good case because of the latest defra stats, which shows bTB can be reduced without the need of a cull of a protected species. Also tourism to Pembrokeshire is going to suffer this year, with people boycotting the area - who wants to see gangs of masked men wandering around the country shooting badgers? I applaud Peter Black for his almost solo stand against the Welsh Assembly and hope he gets re-elected, and I hope that the architects for this flawed scheme get the boot come election time - starting with Elin Jones.”
