The Unilever factory in Swansea will close with the loss of around 225 jobs, it was announced today.

The consumer goods giant confirmed factories at Swansea and Bridgend will shut by the end of 2013 with the loss of 250 jobs, and Ewloe in Flintshire will close by the end of 2014 with the loss of another 100 staff, with 400 jobs moving to Port Sunlight, Wirral.

Swansea AM Mike Hedges said: “Although I’ve been told that Unilever plans to offer jobs to staff facing redundancy in Swansea at their new base in Merseyside, I sincerely doubt that this will be of any consolation or benefit to the 225 local people that will now lose their job as a result.”

The former Alberto Culver factory at Swansea's Enterprise Park makes personal care products; in Bridgend the company has a distribution site.

“There needs to be money for local businesses to access and grants for people with ability and ideas to setup and start growth.

but there is none of this, and less so in swansea, its almost as if everyone is burying their heads in the sand, the only way things will change if there are more employment opportunities, and the only way to do that is to make local people want to invest and make a future here.

But many need financial help to do so, its pointless saying if you could you would, they could share 500k between 50 people, if they were vetted properly I am sure they would make their money back and reap the longterm benefits, but there is nothing like that.

Just stories of how millions are wasted on stupid projects, just the other day some idiot was given around 100k to study Dylan Thomas, I mean jesus christ!”

“What would happen if Wales as a nation stopped buying products from Unilever on the basis that there was no local representation of the brand, would they then return? I know that as a family we could survive quite happily without this brand, but can they if the Nation stopped purchasing from them?”
