DON'T waste your time leaning on a lamp-post — go along to the new ukulele club at Swansea's St James Club tomorrow.

The versatile little uke, which comes into its own on whimsical, comical and South Seas-tinged numbers, is enjoying a bit of a comeback according to enthusiast Richie Gent, who is behind the fledgling club along with Rob Latham.

Richie says: "It is a surprisingly versatile instrument and relatively easy to learn, although it takes some work to master."

And despite its vintage sound it can hold its own on rock anthems too, he insists.

"I am in the middle of practising Teenage Kicks on it at the moment and I do songs by the Boomtown Rats, and Anarchy In The UK, by the Sex Pistols."

In honour of one of the most famous evangelists for the ukulele, George Harrison, the group will take a spin around Here Comes The Sun too. There will be a nod or two to George Formby as well, who popularised the uke and the banjolele. Once the club finds its feet Richie hopes they can take their repertoire to care homes and old people's homes and play for charity events in the area.

Players of all abilities are welcome to go along from 7.30pm.
