Tuition at home rising
THE number of Welsh youngsters being home schooled increased by 10 per cent last year, according to the latest figures.
Details released by the Welsh Government show that 986 pupils of school age were taken out of local authority education to be taught at home, compared to 896 in 2010-11.
But the number of youngsters being home schooled remains a tiny fraction of the nation's pupils — according to the annual schools census, there are 465,943 pupils in state maintained schools in Wales.
Rex Phillips, from the teachers union NASUWT, said: "The figures demonstrate that the vast majority of parents and pupils in Wales value the provision of state education through the comprehensive system, which is a hallmark of Welsh Government."
