True impact of schemes
I'D like to bring to people's attention a book which everyone involved in wind farm applications, planning officers in particular, should read. It is called Windfarm Visualisation; Perspective or Perception? It makes disturbing reading.
The author, Alan Macdonald, has more than 20 years experience in developing photomontage visualisations for planning applications. He reveals in detail how virtually all current and recent wind farm application documents and presentations fail to give anything like a true impression of the visual impact of these schemes. For those of us who suspected this all along, here is the proof.
Of the large number of recent wind farm applications Macdonald examined, not one gave a true impression of the visual impact.
The book clearly demonstrates that the current guidelines for such visualisations/presentations are wholly inadequate, rendering not only local communities and campaigners but also, alarmingly, planning officers, unable to make a true assessment of these vitally important matters.

“Does that mean 4 times greater by volume or 4 times greater dimensions?
Examples:
Structure 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 by volume
Increase 4 times by volume = 32 = 3.174 x 3.174 x 3.174 approx
Increase 4 times by dimension = 8 x 8 x 8 = 512”

“To reinstate a couple of sentences axed from my letter:
One shocking quote of any number one could cite from this important, authoritative book: "A situation exists where the general public, planners and decision makers... are expected to make an informed decision from photomontages which seriously distort landscape and under-represent visual impact."
Of the large number of recent windfarm applications Macdonald examined, not one gave a true impression of the visual impact. In some cases they were out by a factor of 4—i.e. the actual impact would be 4 times greater than the computer visualisation showed.

“Jiffy if 'Stinky Town' bothers you that much use the heads of the valleys A465, and BTW you don't pass a row of wind turbines on the hills between Swansea and Cardiff, Mynydd Maendy wind farm is 4 miles away from the M4 at its nearest point, would you tell somebody that you passed a shop when you were 4 miles from it.....no I thought not, and anyway you should be concentrating on the road not looking at wind turbines, you'll cause an accident if you're not careful, did you know wind turbine applications have been turned down on the grounds of driver distraction because deluded people lovingly gaze at them instead of concentrating on the road.
I drove past them today and none of them were turning.....again....what a waste of money.”

“Drive along the M4 between Swansea and Cardiff and you'll pass a row of wind turbines along the hills. They don't upset me at all - whereas passing through Stinky Town (Port Talbot) does.”
