Tributes for stalwart of Scorpions rugby club
SOUTH Wales Scorpions rugby league side is mourning the loss of one of its founder members.
The side, which plays out of Neath's famous Gnoll ground, was formed in 2010 as a replacement for the professional Celtic Crusaders, which was moved to North Wales.
The new side quickly built up a loyal support who have been saddened by the passing of its former director John Brennan (pictured)
Mr Brennan had resigned recently from the club in order to fully focus on battling cancer.
A club statement said: "It is with great sadness that South Wales Scorpions announce the passing of former director John Brennan — who stepped down from his role last week due to ill health.
"As one of the founder members of the club, John had worked tirelessly to help the club grow over the first three years and our deepest sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones."
The club's message board has begun to fill up with tributes for Mr Brennan.
Brianrandy179 wrote: "We wish to give or deepest condolences to John's family, friends and everyone connected with this great club, he was a great man and loved rugby league.
And Rob Law said: "John will be truly missed. My condolences to his family. Rest in peace."
Another fan posted: "Rest in Peace John — a true gentleman and a fantastic fan of the game we all love."
Following his resignation Mr Brennan said at the time: "I'd just like to thank everyone for all their support and for all the messages I've had from everyone — players, supporters and officials. I've enjoyed myself and it's been a massive education for me."
Mr Brennan's funeral takes place on Friday, November 9 from 10.30am to 11.30am in St Theresa's Catholic Church in Sandfields, Port Talbot for a requiem mass. Then on to Margam Crematorium at 12pm.
"His family have invited everyone to join them for a drink to celebrate a wonderful man at the Towers Hotel in Swansea afterwards," said a club spokesman.
Mr Brennan, who ran a building firm, Contract Services, is survived by his wife Andrea and daughters Holly and Cassie.
