TRIBUTES have been paid to the mother of an eight-year-old boy who won a prestigious national award for caring for her.

Multiple sclerosis sufferer Wendy John, of Bryn Road, Loughor, died suddenly on February 17, aged 44.

The mum-of-one, who was diagnosed with MS around 12 years ago, was dependent on her son for things most people take for granted, such as dressing and carrying items.

In recognition of all the Craig y Nos school pupil has achieved, he was named Young Carer of the Year at the Women's Own Children of Courage Awards in 2008.

He also met the Prime Minister and was recognised by his community by being presented with the Llwchwr Council Civic Award —  presented to individuals who have done something remarkable.

Ms John's best friend of 34 years, Caroline Richards, said the award was one of her childhood friend's proudest moments.

She said: "William is an amazing child. Nothing fazed him, he knew Wendy's good times and the bad times.

"When he won the courage award it was one of the proudest moments of her life. She was over the moon and couldn't believe it."

Ms Richards met Ms John during Bishopston Comprehensive School's first intake, and remained friends ever since.

"She was a larger than life character who had a good sense of humour and a loud infectious laugh," she said.

"We were bridesmaids at each other's weddings and William is my godson and my daughter Lauren was her goddaughter."

Leave your Lasting Tribute to Wendy John

Despite her debilitating condition, Ms John, who was originally from Longacre, Murton, never let her illness get her down.

"She fought her illness and was always in high spirits. She was such a determined woman who wanted to be independent and live her life.

"During the last few months she had been in a wheelchair but she would not let her disability get her down.

"She liked concerts. She went to see Take That and was due to see the X Factor tour last weekend despite it clashing with her other love — rugby.

"She also enjoyed watching the Grand Prix on television

"We enjoyed doing things that friends do together, going over each other's houses, going out for food and having a good old chin wag."

Ms John attended Swansea College before working in the Guildhall, Arthur Llewellyn Jenkins, and Howard and Palmer.

Ms Williams said: "She had a cross section of jobs. She ran the White Rose in Walter Road for a few months before she became ill. I have lost a good friend and I will really miss our chats."

Ms John's cousin, Michael Diment, of Kingrosia Park, Clydach, said: "Wendy was such an inspirational person who was always looking for a cure for MS and was always very caring."

Ms John's funeral will take place at Murton Methodist Church at 10.45am tomorrow followed by cremation at Swansea Crematorium at 12pm.
