A SWANSEA University professor who helped maintain the standards in Swansea Council has stepped down.

Professor Iwan Davies won praise from across the chamber at a meeting of Swansea Council on Thursday for the dedication he showed to chairing the standards committee.

Council chairman Des Thomas said: "Iwan Davies was the former chairman of the standards committee and I would like to thank him for his service.

"He made a valuable contribution to the standards of this authority."

Mr Davies was chairman of the committee between 2001 and 2012.

Council leader David Phillips also praised the former chairman's work for the local authority, saying his retirement was regrettable, but understandable.

He said: "He was on a committee which dealt with more than just councillors' behaviour, it became a resource for many and a beacon for Swansea, leading the field.

"Mr Davies was very interested in receiving submissions from members as to how we felt things could be improved.

"The only thing I ask is that we continue his success."
