The road was closed until 4.15am yesterday morning while an investigation was carried out.

It caused major traffic disruption in the area.

Miss Davies was known to Kevin Madge, Carmarthenshire Council leader and a Garnant councillor, who said her death was a “tragedy” for the community.

“She’s from my ward. I’m absolutely devastated, I know the family very well,” he said.

“It is a real tragedy, I’m devastated for them and I’m really upset myself. She was a lovely girl and is well known in the community and is from a very respected family in Garnant.

“My thoughts go out to her family and my thoughts go out to all of those injured in the crash.”

Mr Madge said he was going to pay the woman’s family a visit today.

“I have been on this ward for 30 years now and these are the things that happen and knock you for six,” he added.

Dyfed-Powys Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fatal collision. A spokeswoman said: “Officers continue to appeal for witnesses and if anyone was in the vicinity of this collision at the appropriate time and has information which could help inquiries, please contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.”

Mike Williams, principal of Coleg Sir Gar said: “It has been very upsetting for all involved in the college. The college wishes to express its deepest sympathy to the family of the car driver who was killed in the collision.

“From the students’ point of view we are very relieved that the students only incurred relatively minor injuries.”

He said all the students had been released from hospital but some might return for precautionary checks

All parents were contacted and the college deployed a full range of student services at Ammanford campus for anyone affected by the tragedy.
