SAW-WIELDING vandals are putting lives at risk by cutting down trees on Swansea's foreshore.

Some of the trees have been sawn three-quarters of the way through, leaving them to topple over in the hours or days following.

One 35ft tree crashed onto the promenade at noon last Thursday when families were enjoying a half-term stroll. The branches of another tree crashed onto a bench.

South Wales Police have been informed.

The area affected is from the skate ramp in Blackpill to opposite the Grange Territorial Army Centre in West Cross.

"I have no idea what would make anyone do such a destructive thing, but I would just like to say they are idiots, they have no friends in Swansea, they need their heads seeing to, and I hope I never meet them because I don't think I could contain my anger," said West Cross councillor Mark Child.

He labelled the attacks "wanton destruction", adding: "It will take decades to repair."

Fellow ward member Des Thomas urged anyone who knew the culprits to contact the authorities.

"Whoever has done this has come down late at night with a saw and made a considerable effort to cause this damage, I just don't understand what is in some people's minds," he said.

Mr Thomas said six or seven trees had been targeted.

Iwan Davies, Swansea Council's head of culture and tourism, added: "This is criminal damage and we will take action if we find out who's responsible."

The council said trees had also been vandalised in Pantycelyn Road, Townhill. Underhill Park in Mumbles has suffered two tree-felling bouts since 2010.

Margi Games, who was walking along the prom at West Cross yesterday, said she wondered if those responsible were desperate for firewood.

Dorothy Chouls, of Killay, said: "We've got the most beautiful frontage, it's one thing the council has got right."

Marilyn Buse, of Killay, added: "It's dreadful. Can they (the council) fit cameras?"

Phone police on 101 or Swansea Council on 01792 280210 if you can help.

“I just visited Parc le Breos in Gower where 5 or 6 large pines have been cut down (chainsaw-ed) and left for no apparent reason. If it were professional arborists or local rangers then one would think they would have cut the pieces into more manageable pieces and removed the brash etc and not simply left them in situ in the scout meadow”

“"The trees that have been cut down would not give anyone a better view"

This is basically what i said, but my comment got minused 7 times. Its quite amzing how factual, sensible advice is perceived as bad among idiots on the internet who just want to flame everything and be negative and imply someone from a nearby home is cutting the trees.

The whole area there is like the amazon rain forest, cutting down a few little tree's will do nothing!”

“The trees that have been cut down would not give anyone a better view – Two are opposite the Territorial Army Compound and the third is adjacent to the Skate Park near Blackpill – From close inspection they have been felled by chainsaw – The two trees at the West Cross end did not fall at the same time there was a day or two between the first and second one falling –”

“Am i correct in thinking that this was the area that the council advocated the felling of trees not so long ago !”
