Travellers set up camp in car park of former DIY store in Swansea
A GROUP of travellers has set up camp in the car park of a former DIY store in Swansea.
The group, which is believed to have arrived within the past week, yesterday consisted of three caravans and a transit van in the car park of the B&Q store in Samlet Road, Llansamlet.
A member of staff at the nearby Buyology bargain store did not want to comment on the arrival, but did confirm the travellers had been on site for a number of days and had been in the store to buy products.
Mark Jones, who has run Car sales firm DS Jones and Son with his father in Samlet road for 26 years, said the latest travellers to arrive on the site had not caused any significant problems.

Mr Jones said: "They came here two days ago with three caravans and three vans. They were here a few months ago.
"We didn't have any problems with them whatsoever."
However, Mr Jones said he and his father had to take measures including blocking off the entrance to their vehicle and maintenance business due to interference from travellers in the past.
But he reiterated that he had not had any issue with the latest travellers to set up home in Llansamlet.
He said: "They seem tidy enough."
A spokesman for Swansea Council confirmed the latest encampment was on private land and therefore it was up to the landowner to move the travellers on if they felt the need to do so.
Llansamlet councillor Penny Matthews was not available for comment.
Fellow Llansamlet councillor Ryland Doyle said: "We have been contacted over recent weeks by lots of people with concerns about travellers but we explained that the council, if it is on council land, has to follow set procedures. If it is on private land it is up to the land owner to take action."

“hacker_jack I'm not sure how many weeks off a year someone on days gets. It's 7 week, maybe a little more. So that brings their work week down to less than 34 on average. Not sure how many days a year i work, about 130 i think it is, so yes i do work a little less than someone on days. Mind U working a 12 hour night shift and then having to drive home isn't easy.”

“Neathboy, Assuming I'm right about where you work: 12 hours shifts yes but it's 4 on 4 off so you only do 4 in 8 days and you get 18 days off every 70. Do the maths and you work 3 hours per week on average than the day staff.”

“Most people would like working shifts, 30% bonus for around 10% less hours than days.”

“CityLover lots of people don't pay their way. More should try working shifts like i have since i was 20. It's a killer working nights the weekend, and getting up at 5 in the morning, but the money is good. I've also been paying into a private pension since i was 16, so i will not be scrounging in my old age either.”

“brochadav Just like the councils who do not provide enough sites, some just simply can't follow the rules. I know it's sickening isn't it!”

“Neathboy, they chose to travel. No one makes them. In my area there is a family of gypsies who have given up their caravans and live in a combination of Gwalia and privately rented housing. They have tried hard to be a part of our area. They have become accepted here and though there have been some incidents, mostly with their kids, everything is generally ok. I even had them do some work for me (which was done well) Now if they want that they can have it but they can't keep travelling and expect a nice cosy house in every town they visit.
Now if we rolled up to a traveller site, how many of the vehicles will be taxed, mot'd and insured? How many kids go to school? How much benefit do they claim whilst working illegally?
My point about the local gypsies is to show they aren't all the same, but the troublemakers (just like football hooligans) give the majority a bad name.
Obey the rules is all I want but seemingly they can't.”

“They call themselves TRAVELLERS, but never seem to travel?
Neathboy..think you're missing the point....let them pay their way like the rest of us...It's all take, take, take with this type of people”
