Tesco has revealed it won't be setting up shop in Treboeth
A SUPERMARKET giant will not be setting up a new shop in Swansea after being unable to agree a new leasehold deal.
Tesco has revealed it won't be taking up the lease on the former Pines Country Club site in Llangyfelach Road in Treboeth.
The local developer who owns the site is now free to get in touch with other operators.
Sophie Akokhia, Tesco's Corporate Affairs Manager, said: "Following discussions with the developer, we have decided not to take a lease for a store. We understand some local residents will be disappointed and wanted to see a Tesco store come forward.

“weslangdon, the petrol may well be 2p dearer than its other stores but it is 2p cheaper than the Shell station next door which was the only one in Bont. The traffic chaos you refer to lasted a few weeks, but is no more! I hate to sound as if I am defending Tesco,- they are big enough to do that for themsleves, but fair's fair. In fact I personally have only shopped there twice, apart from buying petrol, as I have a preference for another monster only a few miles away..”

“Completely untrue folks. I see no evidence that Tesco has ruined anything in the Bont, except for a minimarket in the main street, which in turn, when it arrived there many years ago caused the closure of numerous corner shops. I don't know of anyone who would wish Tesco to be taken away. Having said that I do suspect that Tesco is struggling to make the store pay its way, as the volume of customers doesn't seem to be there. This could be a reason why they have decided not to proceed at Treboeth. They may well have reached saturation point.”

“The Tesco store in Pontarddulais has caused traffic chaos and damaged local business's it has also failed to deliver on local jobs. It is though sucking huge amounts of the grocery £ out of local peoples pockets. Its petrol is 2p per litre dearer than Tesco in Fforestfach or the Morriston store in Llanelli. Tesco gets 40p out of every £1 spent on groceries in the Swansea area, its pay is low, part time and its staff depend on tax credits to get by. Apart from that its the best thing since sliced bread.
