DETECTIVES were questioning a teenager after a man was found with a fractured skull in the middle of a Swansea dual carriageway.

The 16-year-old suspect was arrested following an alleged unprovoked assault in the city centre on Saturday night.

But despite this development, police said they still wanted to hear from anyone with information on the incident.

The injured man, who is aged 22 and from Skewen, was in a critical condition at first but is now said to be improving.

A couple driving through Quay Parade saw him on the central reservation outside Sainsbury's, got out to see to him and then flagged down a passing police car.

Detective Inspector Peter Doyle of Swansea Central CID said: "Although the arrest is significant I am still appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or who knows the identity of the moped riders to come forward.

"The victim's condition is improving, although he has sustained serious head injuries as a result of the assault."

Police believe a group of nine moped riders travelled from the direction of Wind Street and approached the man at Quay Parade.

It is alleged one of them hit him over the head with an unknown weapon before the gang rode off towards Eastside.

The man had been on a night out with friends but became separated from them.

He underwent surgery and is being cared for at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Mr Doyle added: "I would like to thank the public for the information they have provided to the investigation team so far."

Anyone with information should contact Swansea Central CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
