A 19-YEAR-OLD from Pontyates has been killed following a road accident.

Nicky Lee Williams died yesterday morning as he rode a scooter at Myrtle Hill, between Ponthenri and Pontyberem.

Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating the fatal incident, which happened at approximately 8.30am.

A spokesman for the force said: "One vehicle was involved — a blue Adly scooter. The male rider of the scooter sustained fatal injuries."

The accident has sent shockwaves through Pontyates, where Nicky was a familiar face.

Llanelli rural councillor Carol Rees said: "Everybody is shell-shocked — the family is well-known in Pontyates and we are a close-knit community.

"Nicky's half-brother Jason died at the age of 21, and for his dad Tony and the family to encounter another tragedy, it is just so sad."

She added: "Our thoughts and condolences go out to them."

The road at Myrtle Hill was closed until just after noon on Wednesday while police investigated the scene.

And it has been revealed that concerns have previously been raised about the stretch of highway.

Glyn ward county councillor Jim Jones said: "This is a tragic accident and I can only offer my sincere condolences to the family at this sad time.

"It is a stretch of road where I have asked the county council for speed-calming measures to be introduced.

"That is something that the public have asked for in the past, but it is a financial issue for the council.

"We don't yet know how this accident happened and whether speed was a factor, but it is just very sad," he added.

Dyfed-Powys Police are appealing to the public for information following the accident.

A spokesman added: "Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to get in contact with Llanelli police station on 101."
