Teen's boyfriend 'was attacked by rape accused'
THE trial of a Llanelli man who denies raping three teenage girls has been told he became violent when confronted by the boyfriend of one of his alleged victims.
The boyfriend in question claimed Dean Cleobury pinned him against a wall, injuring his neck, in the early hours confrontation in Loughor.
It happened, jurors heard, shortly after a 16-year-old girl who had fallen asleep at a party woke to find Cleobury allegedly raping her on a bed in a spare room.
Cleobury, aged 22, of Rhandir, Bynea, pleaded not guilty when his trial began at Swansea Crown Court on Monday.
He is accused of raping the 16-year-old in the autumn of 2008 when he was a guest at a birthday party attended by some 15 teenagers.
Cleobury, formerly of Culfor Road, Loughor, is further accused of raping a 16-year-old girl five years ago; and raping a 15-year-old girl last August when she was at Pembrey Country Park on a camping trip.
Among witnesses on day two of the case was the boyfriend of the girl who was allegedly sexually attacked at the house party.
The court has heard that the young couple had arranged to spend the night in a spare room, but after they went to bed the witness became restless and rejoined the party downstairs, leaving his girlfriend asleep.
Giving evidence over a video- link, the boyfriend admitted that when he went back downstairs he told people he had just had sex with his girlfriend.
However, he had not been "boasting or bragging" about this, he said. He had just been replying to a question someone had asked him.
The witness said that when he later went back upstairs he found his girlfriend very upset. She then told him she had woken up to find someone on top of her, having sex with her.
The boyfriend told the court that, as he knew Cleobury had been upstairs, he asked her: "Was it Dean?"
With "no hesitation whatsoever" his girlfriend then confirmed that Cleobury had been her attacker, the court heard.
The boyfriend told Frank Phillips, defending, that shortly after this conversation he angrily confronted Cleobury and accused him of rape.
"He denied it vehemently," said the witness.
"He was indignant at the accusation."
Cross-examined by Mr Phillips, the boyfriend agreed that he had threatened Cleobury in the confrontation, telling him he wanted him dead.
He could not remember vowing to slit Cleobury's throat but it was possible that he had said something like this.
The boyfriend claimed the incident then became violent with Cleobury attacking him and pinning him against a wall, causing his neck to become bruised.
Later, Mr Phillips went on to ask the boyfriend: "After you left your girlfriend that night and went downstairs for a cigarette and told people you had had sex with her, did you go back upstairs and have sex with her again?"
The boyfriend replied: "No, I'm 100 per cent sure of that."
Questioned by Geraint Walters, prosecuting, the witness also rejected defence suggestions that he had "influenced" his girlfriend to blame the defendant as her attacker.
She had not hesitated at all, he said, when she had identified Cleobury to him as the man responsible.
The case continues.
